Creating a Rock, Paper, Scissors Culture

Have you read the Legend of Rock, Paper, Scissors by Dan Daywalt? A great story about the "history" of rock paper scissors and how there are only the most mighty in some kingdoms.

I had the opportunity to read this book to my children's classes this week. I love this book because it opens up many opportunities for changing voices and getting engaged in various battles.

The part that struck me though as I was reading the story was not about the battles won, or lost, but the need to have a team that is on the same page. Creating a culture like that of the story, there are battles that happen, victories are won and defeats are suffered, but the game is the most important part for the group.

I see the Rock, Paper, Scissors culture as a space where teams work together developing and collaborating on inspirations and developments to reach their ultimate goals. Like a game of RPS there are times when certain Teams that work well together have a dance like Rock, Paper, Scissors where victories will come in waves, varying from different sources, providing more opportunities for the team to grow. The initial idea might come from Rock but then be modified by Paper, and enhanced by Scissors. A flow of teamwork that uses the process as a space to grow each other as well as move toward the goals.

As a leader, bringing a RPS culture means a lot of trust, communication, and empowerment to the team that follows. Can you as the leader play RPS and lose and find joy in the loss? Are you able to inspire the team so that the game fuels the larger victory?

Kim Malone Scott, speaker and author of Radical Candor writes, "If you want to build a ship, don't drum up people to collect wood and don't assign them tasks and work, but rather teach them to long for the endless immensity of the sea."

The objective is to foster a culture of competition through the game of Rock, Paper, Scissors, with a focus on team success, one match at a time.
